The film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, bore the following dedication: "The cast and crew of Star Trek wish to dedicate this film to the men and woman of the spaceship Challenger, whose courageous spirit shall live to the 23rd century and beyond...." One of the shuttlepods carried aboard the Enterprise-D was named for Challenger astronaut Ellison Onizuka.

In real life, the orbiter Enterprise was named by American President Gerald Ford after many Star Trek fans wrote to NASA, urging that the first space shuttle be named for Star Trek's starship. Gene Roddenberry and several members of the Star Trek cast were honored guests at the rollout of the Enterprise in September, 1976.
