Varro
Varro Xenology Varro Script
History:
Members of the itinerant humanoid species Varro once lived in identical pods known as Segments. The Segments were all joined together, though the whole was a haphazard construction according to Seven of Nine. They have been travelling for 400 years. USS Voyager's encounter with the Varro is shown in [#111 The Disease] and focuses on the latter part of the encounter where Voyager's crew are helping the Varro repair their warp engines but are finding the job none too easy because the Varro seems to be a xenophobic race.^Harry Kim fell in love with the engineer Derran Tal, breaking Starfleet regulations in so doing, and it earned him a formal reprimand on his record. The strength of their bond resulted in the Varro condition called "the shared heart", signified by moments when the skin luminesces. Breaking the bond resulted in acute physical discomfort for Kim, such as chronic sleeplessness and acute gastro-enteritis. It is not known what effect it had on Tal except that she mentioned medicines and could have used them. The Varro at that time had a dissident movement comprising hundreds of people who wanted to split off from the huge ship and control their own destiny as individuals or in small groups. Tal was a member of the dissident movement. The dissident movement manufactured a parasite to attack the links between Segments, with the aim of separating the Segments. The parasite also attacked Voyager's hull, causing the same microfractures as on the Varro ship's hull. When the dissident movement's use of the parasite was revealed to the Varro authorities (in the person of Jippeq), Tal slowed down the action of the parasite by using polaron surges, but the Varro ship began to break up. Voyager temporarily extended its structural integrity field around the Varro ship to enable them to complete the evacuation of the endangered areas. Jippeq then, at Tal's urging, allowed the Varro ship to separate into Segments as planned by the dissident movement. Most of the Varro elected to stay together, but the dissidents chose to leave.
