TNG "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" The Kyushu was named for one of the four main islands of Japan, where a Japanese orbital launch facility was located. The USS New Orleans was the prototype of the New Orleans class of Federation starship in the 2360s.
Contrary to popular belief, there was no starship named USS City of New Orleans. The confusion arose from an oblique reference to an Arlo Guthrie song called "City of New Orleans in the comments of the Star Trek Encyclopedia.
