The Kyushu was destroyed by the Borg at the battle of Wolf 359 in early 2367. TNG "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II" The Kyushu was named for one of the four main islands of Japan, where a Japanese orbital launch facility was located. The Kyushu was a study model designed by Ed Miarecki. The USS New Orleans was the prototype of the New Orleans class of Federation starship in the 2360s.
Contrary to popular belief, there was no starship named USS City of New Orleans. The confusion arose from an oblique reference to an Arlo Guthrie song called "City of New Orleans in the comments of the Star Trek Encyclopedia. Federation ships, often designed as frigates. The starships Renegade and Thomas Paine (TNG "Conspiracy") were both New Orleans-class ships, as was the Kyushu.

A study model was made for this class of ship and was seen very briefly as the Kyushu in the ship graveyard in "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II." Named for the Ship we called the City of New Orleans.
