History:
The Federation-class starship was a Mk-X, class I dreadnought type of Federation vessel built in the 23rd century. This three-nacelled starship is similar in styling to the Constitution-class heavy cruiser, in a bulkier arrangement. This ship is outfitted for a 20 year range at light-speed before overhaul is required. The first vessels of this class were authorized in appropriations on stardate 6066.
The Federation-class starship Entente was one of several ships from the Star Fleet Technical Manual that was mentioned in a Trek production. While this manual was once considered canon by the producers, it is now mostly apocryphal, save for a few canonically spotted details, like this class. In total, 20 vessels were listed as authorized for construction in the manual, named for political organizations. The mention of the USS Entente in Star Trek: The Motion Picture would normally suggest that this class is indeed the one mentioned in the Technical Manual. Consequently, this would present an apparent discontinuity in the (already flawed) registry system, because is it normally assumed that the USS Excelsior (NX-2000) is a newly built ship as of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
