History:
In 2152, Enterprise entered a cloaked minefield and was damaged by one mine, while another attached itself to the hull near the impulse reactor. When Reed ventured outside to defuse it, it pierced his leg with a metal spikepinning him to the Enterprise's hull.
Sato translated hostile messages from the Romulan Star Empire warning Enterprise to leave the system immediately. But the ship was unable to go to warp until the mine was defused.
At the end of disarmament, the mine triggered a sub-detonator. So Archer used a pair of shuttlepod blast doors as a shield as Tucker detached the plating on which the mine was attached. Enterprise escaped the pursuing vessels by going to warp.
With its overall shape, the early Bird of Prey clearly influenced the design of the 23rd Century Romulan ships. The nacelles are similar to those on the Klingon Raptor class, suggesting a technology exchange. Warp drive and cloaking devices are already in use on these Romulan vessels.
