I.K.S. Gr'oth IKS-4175

Commanded by Captain Koloth in 2267. Koloth took the Gr'oth to Deep Space Station K-7 on stardate 4523, invoking a clause of the Organian Peace Reaty that allowed the Gr'oth's crew to make use of Federation shore leave facilities.
DS9 "Trials and Tribble-ations"
The Gr'oth was a replica of the original Klingon battle cruiser model designed by Matt Jefferies for the original Star Trek series. Modelmaker Greg Jein, who built the Gr'oth, changed Jefferies's design slightly by incorating surface detailing similar to that done for the Klingon ships in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Ironically, Koloth's ship was not seen in the original TOS "The Trouble With Tribbles"because the ship model had not yet been designed at that point in the original series.

History:
Starships that formed the backbone of the Klingon Defence-Force for decades. The D7-type vessels were in service in the 2260's, a design shared with the Romulan Star Empire during the brief alliance between the two powers, These vessels, some 228 meters in overall lenght, were equipped with warp drive and phase-disruptor armament.
The Klingon battle cruiser was designed by Matt Jefferies and introduced durring the third season of the original Star Trek series. A hybrid version, a copy of Jefferies's original model, but with the elyborate hull panelwork from the feature-film version, was built by Greg Jein for DS9 "Trials and Tribble-action". The term D7 was originally a gag devised by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy during the filming of the original Star Trek series, but "Trials and Tribble-actions" made the term "official."
