History:
These were non corporeal lifeforms that appeared as ghost-like threads of smoke. They were apparently once corporeal beings but evolved to a level where their bodies were no longer necessary. However it seems the wisps still needed a vessel to navigate space and became trapped in their decaying craft. To escape certain death, they plan to capture a humanoid ship and use their bodies to continue their existence.
Their huge vessel engulfed Enterprise in its docking bay, rendering it defenseless. The wisps then possessed the crew one by one, while assuring Archer that they were benign explorers. Mayweather discovered that the beings could not enter the catwalk due to the nacelle shielding, so the unaffected crew sought sanctuary there. T'Pol allowed one of the aliens to possess her, learning their true intent. Phlox recommended that they flood the ship with carbon dioxide to asphyxiate the possessed crew and thus expell the life forms. Archer then ordered Enterprise away and for torpedoes to be fired on the wisps' ship, destroying it.
